Drywall Estimating: Sheets, Mud, Tape, and Everything You Need

Drywall is one of the most common DIY and contractor tasks, but underestimating materials means extra trips and project delays. Here's everything you need to estimate accurately.
How to Count Sheets
Standard drywall sheets are 4' × 8' = 32 sq ft each.
- Calculate total wall area: perimeter × ceiling height
- Subtract doors (21 sq ft each) and windows (15 sq ft each)
- Add 10% for waste and cuts
- Divide by 32 to get sheet count
Example: 12×14 ft room, 8 ft ceiling: (12+14+12+14) × 8 = 416 sq ft. Minus 2 doors and 1 window: 416 − 42 − 15 = 359 sq ft. Plus 10%: 395 sq ft ÷ 32 = 13 sheets

Pro Tips
- Hang drywall horizontally on walls for fewer joints and stronger structure
- Ceilings first, then walls — wall sheets support ceiling edges
- Stagger seams so they don't align with door/window corners (prevents cracking)
- Buy 10-15% extra — it's cheap and a broken sheet is worthless
