The old "multiply by 7" rule is inaccurate. Dogs mature much faster in their first two years, and large breeds age faster than small breeds.
How to Use This Dog Age Calculator
Enter your dog's age in human years and select the breed size (small, medium, large, giant). The calculator estimates your dog's equivalent age using breed-specific aging curves.
Formula & How It Works
Updated model: First year = 15 human years. Second year = 9 human years. Each year after: small dogs +4, medium +5, large +6, giant +7 years.
Calculation Example
A 7-year-old Golden Retriever (large): 15 + 9 + (5 Γ 6) = 54 human years equivalent. A 7-year-old Chihuahua (small): 15 + 9 + (5 Γ 4) = 44 years.
Expert Tips
Large breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans (8-12 years) than small breeds (12-16 years). Senior care starts at age 7 for large dogs, age 10 for small dogs. Regular vet checkups become more important as dogs age.
